Sheryl L. Saavedra J.D.

FAMILY LAW ATTORNEY

Sheryl Saavedra, Attorney at Law

Sheryl L. Saavedra devotes her practice to helping clients through various issues of Family Law including complex and high asset divorce, custody, child support, prenuptial agreements, adoptions, guardianships and Guardian ad Litem representation. She obtained her law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1994. She has concentrated over 25 years of law practice primarily to the area of Family Law. Sheryl joined Peak Legal Group, LLC in 2019 after beginning her Albuquerque law practice with Batley Powers (formerly known as Little, Gilman-Tepper & Batley) in 2017. Formerly, Sheryl owned a successful private family law practice in Roswell, NM as the owner of her own law firm. In addition to having substantial legal experience in the abuse and neglect system, Sheryl served as the Chaves County Guardian ad Litem representing over 100 children in foster care for the years 2015 and 2016. She continues in her work advocating for children by serving as a board member for The Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse.

Representing adults and children in family law cases has always been Sheryl’s passion. In law school, Sheryl clerked for the Honorable Anne Kass and completed her clinic work at the Peanut Butter and Jelly program for incarcerated parents. After over 25 years of practicing primarily family law, Sheryl has the innate ability to review a client file and map out the most strategic game plan for that particular client under those particular circumstances. The art of developing a strategy for a client from beginning to end and adjusting along the way, helps Sheryl to garner the best results for her clients.

While settling or mediating a case in the client’s best interest is always an option, Sheryl’s tenacity as a litigator has earned her the reputation of being an attorney who will not hesitate to fight for her clients.

Ms. Saavedra is also trained and skilled as a Collaborative Law Practitioner, assisting clients in a non-litigation process. This process centers on mutual resolutions between the parties and their counsel, and utilizes mutual experts and other professionals to assist the parties in achieving successful resolution.

Sheryl brings the same vigilance she exercises in divorce and custody cases, to her work as a Guardian ad Litem for children. In her first year as the Chaves County Guardian ad Litem for Children’s Court, Sheryl was nominated for the New Mexico Welfare and Juvenile Justice Excellence Award at the Children’s Law Institute. She is a staunch advocate for children in a variety of family law related cases including divorces, custody, adoptions and guardianships, but she has a particular affinity for representing children in the abuse and neglect system. She is able to work with both children and their parents to develop a plan that places the child’s needs as paramount, while still seeking a viable solution to reintegrate the family, where appropriate.

Sheryl Saavedra was appointed this year as Treasurer on the UNM School of Law Alumni Board. Having served on the Alumni Board since 2015, Sheryl brings much dedication and expertise to this important organization. We look forward to her continued leadership on the Executive Board over the next 4 years, advancing to President. Sheryl continues to be involved with Rotary District 5520, serving this year as District Public Image Chair. She participates in the New Mexico Practice Collaborative Group and the Albuquerque Bar Association and volunteers with the Law-La-Palooza Free Legal Fair. She stays busy with her husband, Hal, and their combined eight children! We congratulate Sheryl on the articles she’s written for the State of NM Bar Bulletin, helping to advance an understanding of family law issues.
